My name is Mark Aiken (maiken, for short) and chromalark is my photoblog. I'm a software engineer and photographer and I live in Seattle with my lovely wife and baby daughter. We all enjoy the crystalline summers of the Pacific Northwest, and I console myself during the long, gray winters by heading into the mountains to play in the snow. I interact with computers all day at work, and photography is my way of tapping into the creative energy that otherwise gets stifled. I do my best not to get carried away with all the technology around digital photography and focus on just expressing myself, but I must confess a weakness for cool lenses and other photo gear.

It's a long-term goal of mine to become a more creative and expressive photographer, and feedback is very helpful in that department. If you are particularly struck by an image you see here, or have a suggestion about how an image may be improved, please take a moment to leave a comment so I can learn from my mistakes.

If you enjoy an image enough to want to own a copy, prints are available for purchase in various sizes. I will even hand-mat them if you like.

A word about the site name: I am an admirer of the widely known photoblog chromasia, and I must admit that I ripped off the "chroma" prefix from that site. "Chroma", of course, refers to the color component (as opposed to luminosity, or brightness) of pixels in a color image. In my defense, the "lark" portion of the site name is original and self-referential: my pre-existing personal blog can be found at a similarly compound domain name, but constructed with a prefix consisting of a French preposition commonly used in restaurant names, indicating locational belonging.

Here are some other photoblogs I read on a regular basis:
