The Alcatraz prison is interesting to nerdy photographer types like me because it looks quite old (it was closed in the 60s) and it's in a moderately advanced state of decay. I'm assuming no recently-constructed prisons in the US have cast-iron spiral staircases like this one, although more's the pity, since it's quite nice to look at.
