The double row of fencing at Auschwitz I

Under the lights

The camp is fortified with watch towers and two lines of (electrified) barbed-wire fencing, to create a no-man's-land along the perimeter. It was surreal to stroll around the camp on a crisp spring day, with the sun peeking out periodically. Without the signs, exhibits, and memorials, you wouldn't guess that this was the site of a systematically executed mass murder campaign.
