Snowy trees near Glacier, Washington

A natural abstract

I just got back from a weekend in the mountains with friends; we have a yearly tradition of getting away to a cabin near Mount Baker, which is tucked up against the northern edge of Washington, near the Canadian border.

We really lucked out this year; the freezing level was very low on Friday and Saturday, so the area around the cabin was blanketed in snow. Usually, the cabin is relatively snow-free and you hit the snowline as you climb up to the ski area.

I went for a walk this morning to soak up the stillness; here is a snippet. This is one time I am sorely aware of the limitations of a photoblog as a publishing medium: this web-size image gives only a passing impression of what this scene looks like at full size.
