A ring of light

Can you get a feel for what this object would look like if it were in focus? I find this picture has the interesting property that smaller, less detailed thumbnails of it immediately give a better sense of the original object than larger copies. At full-screen, the image becomes very abstract. At thumbnail size, it looks almost completely in focus.

Update: I tweaked this after it was first posted to blow out the background more.
