A gargoyle on Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris

A different view of the gargoyle

This is yesterday's gargoyle, but from a different angle.

Obviously, the sky blew out and the lens flared, but I like this picture anyhow. These days, I would stand around for a while getting an extra exposure for the sky and then sandwich the two images back together again in Photoshop, but at the time I took this frame I was just a student tromping around with some black and white film, and I didn't have the foresight to realize my negative would be bulletproof in the sky area when I got it back from the lab weeks later.

It's made a world of difference to me to be able to fine-tune my exposure skills on the spot, instead of realizing after the fact that I flubbed something. I've easily learned more in a single year with a digital SLR than I did in the preceeding 10 using film.
