Tossing a glider in Magnuson Park, Seattle

Fun for the whole family

I notice families a lot more in public now that I'm a father myself (it still seems really odd to say that). This group of people caught my eye, silhouetted as they were against the evening sky. I'm pretty sure they were just tossing around a glider, although I suppose it might have been one of those little model planes with the wind-up or rubber-band propellors.

So, you wonder: is this really what the sky looked like as dusk was approaching on that day in Magnuson Park? Well, yes it was, if you had looked at the sky through a darkening / contrast-enhancing filter of some kind, maybe a nice pair of sunglasses, say. This is the fallacy and power of photographs: there's no one "right" way of portraying the world around us. What we perceive and remember of a scene is very subjective, even after you have set aside the effect of eyeglasses, sunglasses, contact lenses, hat brims that shade you from the sun, etc.

In this case, I saw a roiling sky at dusk, with a glow along the horizon as the sun struck the clouds at an angle. The family with the glider were silhouetted against the sky. And that's what you see here.

Great shot, great compositon. You first comment made me smile, I will be a father in the next few weeks, very strange thinking that I'm going to be somebodies Dad! :)

Congratulations on the impending arrival, Dan!

Great capture! I love the silhouttes and the cloud color. Magnuson Park is one of my favorite parks so it's nice to be able to see from my computer =)
