A stand of leafless trees, near Mount Baker, Washington

A landscape abstract

This image was taken last winter, during a cabin trip I went on with several friends near Mount Baker, Washington. I chose it because it represents what's in store for us now that the leaves are falling in earnest.

It's become a winter ritual for us to rent a cabin near Mount Baker for the weekend and hang out with friends, snowboarding during the day and sitting in a hot tub at night. It's a rough life. Last year, though, the ski conditions were abysmal, and we spent our time lounging around the cabin and taking hikes through the nearby hills instead. This stand of trees was on the shores of a nearby stream.

The snowfall in the Cascades last winter was so sparse that Seattle feared it would face a drought this summer. That crisis was averted by a very wet spring, but I for one have my fingers crossed that this season turns out very differently for skiing.
