A view from the Anacortes / San Juans ferry

More ferry ride

Here is a view of an island shoreline from the Anacortes / San Juan Islands / Sydney, BC ferry that my wife and I rode a few weeks ago.

Riding ferries in Washington state can be a wonderfully scenic and relaxing way to spend some time, although if you're in a car, things are marred somewhat by how expensive the tolls have become. We had to swallow hard when we found out that a car with a driver and one passenger commands a toll around $60USD for the Anacortes / Sydney, BC crossing (which is around 3 hours of sailing).

Why? The IRS figures it costs something like $0.42 to drive your car for 1 mile, right (counting gas and wear on the car). In 3 hours you could surely drive 150mi, so just to drive that distance would cost $63. So you saved at least $3 by riding the ferry.
