Posters on Capitol Hill, Seattle

Free speech being exercised on Capitol Hill

What with Seattle's strong music scene, there are posters everywhere on Capitol Hill. In 1994, the city passed legislation banning posters on utility posts and other city property, but citizens promptly got fairly upset. In 2002 the Washington State Court of Appeals found the postering ban overly broad and therefore in violation of the state Constitution. Not long after the ruling, the city passed new rules on postering that imposed rules and conditions on the practice but no longer banned it outright.

It was only when I started consciously taking pictures of poster-covered posts that I realized how extensively papered Capitol Hill is, at least along the major Pike / Pine / Broadway corridors. I guess I've just gotten used to the posters as part of the fabric of the neighborhood.
