Fish vendors at the Pike Place Market, Seattle

Another market image

The Pike Place Market is famously home to a cluster of fishmonger stands, at least one of which has a staff that conspicuously yell instructions to one another and fling fish around. This always goes down well with the tourists, who cluster around to gawk at the strange behavior. I'm not entirely sure how much this helps the stand's bottom line; I for one am not sure I want my purchase thrown, but maybe I'm not their target audience.

Anyway, this was the scene around the more tourist-oriented stand. The folks behind the counter seem to spend a lot of time trying to figure out if anyone in the audience is actually likely to buy fish; the great majority of the people in this scene (and me, too, I suppose) were just standing around looking, not actually patronizing the stand.

I think the special of the day was crab.
